My Dad, “you should get on Simon’s new show, X Factor, get some great exposure.”
Me, “Well…”
Dad, “Might as well - it’d be good exposure.”
Me, “I know.”
Dad, “You’re right there in LA.”
Me, “I know.”
My dad goes, “Beats playin for change in the subway.”
Me, “I know.”
My dad goes, “as long as you can get in there and not sell your soul.”
Me, “I know.”
My Dad says, “Well, you’re right there - you should do it.”
Me, “I know…”
Then my Dad says, “I gotta show you this new artist - have you heard of Adele?”
Me, “Uhh…”
My dad, “She did it. She came outta nowhere and is all over the place now, I saw her on T.V.”
Me, “…I know.”
My Dad, “Well if she can do it, you can do it. Besides, you’re just as -“
Me, “Uh, Dad?”
My Dad, “Yeah?”
Me, “Adele has been ‘doing it’ for like, 6 years now or something. It just takes the whole like, ENTIRE WORLD to know about you before people know who you are.”
My Dad, “Oh… Really? She’s been around THAT long?”
Me, “Yeah. And it’s all a crap shoot. Besides, I’ll probably never be like that anyway I mean, who am I???”
Dad, “You’re next.”
Me, “Wha..?”
Dad, “You’re next.”
Me, “Well… OK.”
*Beat*
Me, “Dad?”
Him, “Yeah?”
Me, “I love you.”
You’re just another doe-eyed female. he’s like a lot of men who have no regard for the female form. he doesn’t see one as more incredible than the next - they’re all the same. he’s a road-dog pickin up road kill.
He’s a fine specimen of a man. his charms wrap themselves around you when you’re in his presence and he knows he’s got you hooked (or convinces you that you are). he feeds on attention - so he’ll never stop looking for someone beautiful to bow to him. he only sees the outside - he’s not looking for something within. he forgets things about a girl, has a brand of one-liners, puts a blanket over your head. treats you like you’re precious. and oh, how lucky you are to be in his car!
He drove too far. with words. words are what keep a girl like me alive. and words are what kill me. careless fool. he went phishing and hooked my heart. with words. tender, honey-dripped, meaningless words.
I saw those red flags - he even waved them a few times in passing. he has one on that ol’ car of his - just a flappin’ in the wind. I didn’t think he would get a hold on me. he picked me up off the road and let me ride with him for awhile. things were great; before he ran me over.
…so i’m being honest. i’m amazed, and i’m so glad we met! you were already on my list of champions, but seriously. amazed. that is all.
It was a song by the Highwaymen sung by Tim Robbins, whose dad was in the group. We sang back up vox for the song.
I wrote a new song called “Breaking Down.” Check out the demo of it from my phone!!
